Consumer advocates call for an independent quality assessment after a viral TikTok video alleged foreign material was found inside a baby diaper

Nigerian health and consumer protection regulators, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, have been urged to independently investigate KissKids diaper claims after a viral TikTok video raised questions about the quality and safety of a baby diaper product.

The call followed a video posted by a Nigerian mother who alleged that she discovered a black foreign material inside a KissKids baby diaper after using 36 of the 40 diapers in a pack.

In the video, the woman expressed concern that the unidentified object could potentially have posed a health risk to an infant had it gone unnoticed.

The post quickly attracted attention on social media, prompting conversations among parents and consumers about product safety, manufacturing standards and quality control in the infant care industry.

The woman later deleted the original video and posted another recording in which she said representatives of the company had contacted her, addressed her complaint and provided replacement products.

She also commended the company’s customer service and responsiveness.

There is, however, no publicly available evidence explaining why the original video was removed beyond the account provided by the woman herself. Similarly, claims circulating online that she was persuaded or compensated to delete the post remain unsubstantiated.

Despite the apparent resolution of the individual consumer complaint, public affairs commentator Femi Omidiji said the underlying safety concern deserved independent regulatory attention.

“The safety of infants should never be left to speculation,” Omidiji said.

“Whenever questions arise about products that come into direct contact with babies’ skin, regulators have a duty to establish the facts through a prompt, transparent and independent investigation. Public confidence is best protected when concerns are addressed with evidence rather than assumptions.”

An email sent to KissKids seeking the company’s official response to the allegation had not received a response as of the time of filing this report.

Omidiji said regulators should determine whether the reported incident was an isolated manufacturing defect, contamination during production or packaging, or whether the affected product met all applicable safety and quality standards.

He stressed that an independent investigation should not automatically be interpreted as an accusation against the manufacturer.

“An independent investigation should not be interpreted as a declaration of guilt against the manufacturer,” he said. “Rather, it is a standard consumer protection measure designed to reassure the public that products intended for babies continue to meet the highest safety and quality standards.”

Baby diapers are designed for prolonged contact with an infant’s sensitive skin, making strict quality control and product safety particularly important.

Omidiji said the incident highlighted the need for manufacturers to maintain rigorous production standards, comprehensive batch testing, product traceability and continuous quality assurance.

“Quality control systems exist to prevent defective products from reaching consumers. Whenever questions arise about those systems, transparency becomes just as important as the investigation itself,” he added.

While acknowledging the company’s reported decision to engage with the consumer and replace the affected products, Omidiji said customer service should complement rather than substitute formal product safety checks.

“Responding swiftly to consumer complaints reflects responsible corporate conduct. However, where allegations involve potential product defects, an independent quality assurance assessment remains essential to protect consumers and strengthen public confidence,” he said.

He suggested that regulators could examine the affected product batch, review relevant production records and, where necessary, conduct laboratory analysis and factory inspections to establish the facts.

Such an approach, he argued, would protect consumers while also giving manufacturers an opportunity to address potentially unfounded allegations with credible evidence.

If an investigation confirms that the product meets the required safety standards, Omidiji said the findings could help restore consumer confidence. If deficiencies are identified, timely corrective action could reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.

At the time of filing this report, no Nigerian regulatory agency had publicly announced the outcome of an investigation into the allegations contained in the TikTok videos. The claims therefore remain unverified.

The episode nonetheless underscores the growing influence of social media in raising consumer concerns and the need for regulators to respond with evidence-based scrutiny.

For parents and manufacturers alike, the central issue is clear: confidence in infant care products should rest not solely on viral posts or individual assurances, but on robust quality control, effective regulatory oversight and transparent investigations whenever credible safety concerns emerge.

The approval, which adopts the Federal Government’s Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), is aimed at improving the welfare of health workers and strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.

The development follows an earlier increase by the state government to bring the salaries of medical personnel in Zamfara in line with those of their counterparts in the Federal Government.

With the new approval, a health worker currently earning ₦100,000 will now take home ₦195,000, while someone on ₦200,000 will earn ₦390,000. A worker on ₦300,000 will now receive ₦585,000, and those on ₦500,000 and ₦1,000,000 will earn ₦975,000 and ₦1,950,000 respectively.

In effect, the 95 percent increase means the existing salary of every affected health worker is almost doubled.

The approval is expected to boost morale, attract and retain qualified health professionals, and ultimately improve healthcare delivery across the state.

It also comes shortly after the state government recruited new health workers last week, with the newly engaged staff set to benefit from the new salary structure.

Health workers in the state have since expressed appreciation to Governor Lawal for the gesture, describing it as a major boost to the sector.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and the delivery of quality healthcare services to the people of Zamfara State.
