The initiative, backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, targets Nigerians aged 25 to 35 with academic backgrounds in health sciences, social sciences and related fields.

According to the government’s statement, the programme was established to tackle persistent gaps in community-level healthcare by training and deploying fellows to local health systems in all 774 local government areas.

Each cohort receives structured training, mentorship and field placements designed to improve local health outcomes and promote healthier communities.

The Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, said the programme is central to developing future leaders within Nigeria’s health sector.

He described it as a groundbreaking initiative built around strategic capacity building, professional development and capstone field engagement aimed at preparing fellows for impactful service.

The scheme forms part of the broader Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative under the Sector-Wide Approach Coordination Office.

It brings together professionals from health, information technology and social sciences, offering extensive leadership development and exposure to best practices within the national health landscape.

As the application deadline draws near, the National Health Fellows Programme is encouraging eligible candidates nationwide to apply before 30 November 2025 through the official website.
