Peter Obi calls for revolution in Nigeria, criticising Tinubu over insecurity, foreign trips and his record in office ahead of the 2027 election
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a political revolution in Nigeria, criticising President Bola Tinubu over insecurity and his frequent foreign trips.
Obi made the remarks on Monday night in Abuja during the inauguration of the NDC Presidential Campaign Council, where he outlined his vision for leadership ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria needed a president who would remain focused on the country’s challenges, particularly insecurity, rather than leave the country during difficult periods.
“We don’t need a government where if there is a problem, our president will run away,” Obi said.
He also pledged that his administration, if elected, would prioritise integrity, accountability and the responsible management of public funds.
“My government will uphold integrity, enforce accountability, and ensure that public funds serve the people, not private interests,” he said.
Obi added that he would not use the presidency for personal enrichment and would not tolerate the misappropriation of public resources by anyone serving under his administration.
The NDC candidate also questioned Tinubu’s travel record, claiming that the president had been outside Nigeria more than 260 times in the past three years.
Obi argued that Tinubu should have devoted more time to visiting states across the federation to explain his administration’s performance to Nigerians.
“Our president has been out of this country over 260 times in the past three years and now he can’t take 30 days to go to all the states of Nigeria to tell them what he has been doing for the past three years with their money,” he said.
He described the situation as unacceptable and called for a revolution that would transform the country.
“That is unacceptable, as we will need a revolution that will turn this country around,” Obi added.
The claim about Tinubu’s foreign trips was made by Obi during his address; the report did not provide an independent breakdown of the president’s travel history.
Obi’s remarks come as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
At the campaign council inauguration, he presented accountability and responsible governance as central commitments of his proposed administration, arguing that public resources should be used to improve the lives of Nigerians.
His comments also placed insecurity and presidential accountability at the centre of his criticism of the Tinubu administration.
The presidency’s response to Obi’s remarks was not included in the report.
Obi’s call for a revolution appeared in the context of his appeal for fundamental political and governance changes, rather than an explicit call for violent action.
