IGP Tunji Disu leads police promotion exercise as new AIGs and CPs are decorated, marking a major leadership reshuffle in Nigeria Police Force

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Monday, 23 March 2026, presided over a high-profile ceremony in Abuja where newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police were formally decorated, marking a significant police promotion exercise within the Nigeria Police Force.

The ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters, brought together senior officers from across the country as the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force moved to consolidate a sweeping internal restructuring aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and command control.

The police promotion exercise followed recent approvals by the Police Service Commission, which elevated several Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General after a rigorous selection process involving written examinations and oral interviews conducted in Abuja.

Speaking through the proceedings, Inspector-General Olatunji Disu emphasised the importance of professionalism, discipline, and renewed commitment from officers assuming their new ranks, describing the development as a “critical step” in repositioning the force to meet evolving security challenges.

Among those promoted is Moshood Jimoh, formerly Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, whose elevation has drawn attention within policing circles due to his reported interest in retaining a strategic command role within Lagos. Sources within the force suggest he is being considered for key postings, including Zone 2 Command and the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Annex in Alagbon.

The police promotion exercise is widely viewed as part of a broader effort by the force leadership to strengthen oversight of sensitive operational units and improve coordination across regional commands, particularly in high-density urban centres.

A senior police official described the restructuring as “decisive and timely”, noting that the new appointments are expected to enhance responsiveness and intelligence-led policing across the country.

The development also comes amid expectations that further redeployments may follow in the coming weeks as the Nigeria Police Force continues to adjust its leadership architecture in line with current security priorities.
