The Zamfara Hajj airlift Gusau Airport operation began on Friday with the departure of the first batch of intending pilgrims directly from the state, a development widely described as a major administrative breakthrough.

The initiative fulfils Governor Lawal’s earlier promise to ensure that pilgrims no longer need to travel to other states before embarking on the spiritual journey to the Holy Land.

State officials confirmed that the exercise is being closely monitored to ensure order, security, and smooth coordination throughout the airlift process.

As part of operational guidelines, authorities have prohibited family members and friends from escorting pilgrims directly into the airport terminal, directing farewell gatherings to the designated Hajj camp instead.

Officials explained that the restriction is aimed at preventing overcrowding and maintaining security at the airport during the ongoing airlift exercise.

The state government said the move represents a new phase of efficiency and convenience in Zamfara’s annual Hajj operations, describing it as a long-awaited reform in pilgrimage logistics.

Intending pilgrims expressed joy over the development, noting that the direct airlift has reduced travel stress and made the process more comfortable and organised.

The airlift is expected to continue in batches over the coming days as the state completes the transportation of all approved pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj exercise.
