The Benin Traditional Council has condemned the recent unauthorised visit by social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, to the Oba of Benin Palace on March 6, 2026.

In a statement signed by Secretary Frank Irabor, the council described the incident as a serious breach of protocol and a desecration of the sacred palace precincts.

Peller reportedly entered the palace without prior permission, causing embarrassment and disturbance within the palace grounds.

The council has taken disciplinary measures against palace staff and chiefs who facilitated the visit.

A chief involved has been suspended indefinitely, while a staff member, Mr. Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for abetting the unauthorised entry.

Additionally, a queen implicated in the incident now faces serious disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin traditions.

Peller has been summoned to appear before a committee of chiefs to provide his account of the events. However, he has reportedly ignored the council’s invitation.

The council is demanding an immediate appearance and an unreserved written apology, warning that failure to comply could result in legal action.

The Benin Traditional Council emphasised its role as custodian of age-old customs and traditions, asserting its capacity to prevent and correct violations of palace protocol.
