Mr Macaroni response protest celebrities silence

Mr Macaroni responds to a protest calling for Nigerians to unfollow celebrities, stating that the people, not celebrities, must lead the change they desire

Actor and content creator, Adebowale Adedayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, has addressed a social media protest calling for Nigerians to unfollow celebrities who remain silent in the face of the country’s ongoing hardships.

The protester, identified as TeniBegiloju on X (formerly Twitter), argued that Nigerian celebrities, except Mr Macaroni, should be unfollowed for failing to speak out on the current state of affairs.

In a post shared on X, the lone protester carried a placard that read, “Nigerians, let’s unfollow all useless celebrities keeping quiet now,” and added the caption, “They don’t deserve our follow. The only person worthy of our respect is Mr Macaroni.”

However, Mr Macaroni quickly responded, distancing himself from the protester’s message. He emphasised that while he is committed to speaking out on important issues, he does not believe that celebrities should be pressured into activism by the public.

“I would never endorse a post like this! Please do not ask celebrities to make sacrifices the people themselves are not ready to make,” Mr Macaroni wrote.

He went on to highlight that celebrities are also citizens and should not be singled out for their silence when many others are similarly quiet.

“Celebrities are citizens like you. If the majority of the people are quiet, why should we blame celebrities?” he continued. “Also, not all celebrities wish to speak on social issues.

So it’s unfair to manipulate us into speaking about certain topics because even when we speak, we get attacked!”

Mr Macaroni further explained that expecting celebrities to take the lead on social issues, without a broader societal commitment, is unrealistic.

He used the example of police brutality in Nigeria, pointing out that while many Nigerians witness such events, few take action in the moment. Instead, many choose to record the incident or walk away, only to later criticise celebrities for not speaking out.

“When Nigerians truly want change, the people will not wait for any celebrity. The people will become their own celebrities, and they will lead and take charge!” Mr Macaroni concluded.

His statement comes at a time when calls for greater accountability from public figures have been increasing, as Nigerians continue to face economic struggles and political instability.

While many celebrities, including Mr Macaroni, have used their platforms to speak out on various issues, others have faced backlash for staying silent on the pressing challenges in the country.

Mr Macaroni’s response has sparked conversation around the role of celebrities in social activism, with some supporting his stance and others advocating for a stronger public voice from influential figures in times of crisis.
