Leicester City Football Club has suffered a setback after an independent appeal board upheld a six-point deduction imposed for breaches of financial regulations, a decision that leaves the club facing a difficult relegation battle with only five matches remaining in the season.

The ruling confirms an earlier sanction issued in February by an independent commission, which found the club in breach of profit and sustainability regulations during the 2023 to 2024 assessment period.

The Leicester City appeal loss means the club remains in the Championship relegation zone, one point from safety.

Appeal was heard by a panel chaired by Lord Dyson and including Sir Gary Hickinbottom and Daniel Alexander KC.

Panel rejected Leicester City’s arguments challenging both the authority of the commission to impose the deduction and the severity of the punishment.

The club had also faced a separate challenge from the Premier League seeking a more severe penalty over the late submission of its annual accounts, but that request was dismissed as part of the broader proceedings.

In a statement following the decision, Leicester City said the matter had now reached its conclusion and reaffirmed its focus on the remaining fixtures of the season.

The club acknowledged the difficult period and expressed gratitude to supporters for their continued backing during a testing campaign.

Leicester City stated that the immediate priority is to approach the remaining matches with determination and focus, as the team looks to influence its league standing through results on the pitch rather than off it.

The financial breaches that led to the sanction were linked to losses exceeding the permitted threshold under the governing rules, placing the club in violation of sustainability requirements designed to regulate spending across competitions.
