The Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly (NEYGA) issued a scathing statement following Amnesty International’s criticism of the arrest and detention of 29-year-old TikToker Ghali Isma’il, who allegedly spread false news about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s death from food poisoning.

Isma’il was apprehended by DSS operatives and remanded by an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court for violating Nigerian laws on misinformation. Amnesty International called the arrest “an abuse of power” and claimed it was aimed at silencing youths on social media.

But NEYGA’s spokesman, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, countered this, accusing AI of “hiding under the cover of freedom of speech to destabilize Nigeria.” He commended the DSS for taking lawful steps and called for a deeper investigation into Amnesty International’s activities in the country.

“Just like with Nnamdi Kanu’s wild claims about Buhari being replaced by a double, we see how unchecked speech can fuel unrest,” Dan-Musa added.
