Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirms electronic transmission of election results remains part of Nigeria’s electoral framework

The Nigerian Senate has clarified that it did not reject the electronic transmission of election results during the consideration of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed lawmakers and the public following widespread speculation on social media about the bill’s provisions.

Akpabio explained that the Senate retained existing legal mechanisms allowing results to be transmitted electronically or in a manner prescribed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He described claims that the chamber removed electronic transmission as inaccurate and misleading.

“This Senate has not rejected electronic transmission of results,” Akpabio said, adding that the amendment preserves prior gains and supports credible elections.

He urged citizens and lawmakers to consult official voting records for verification.

Electronic transmission of results has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s electoral reforms since the 2023 general elections, aimed at improving transparency and reducing manipulation at collation centres.

Civil society groups and opposition parties have repeatedly called for clear legal guarantees to maintain public confidence in the voting process.

The Senate’s clarification is expected to reassure voters and stakeholders that Nigeria’s electoral framework continues to incorporate modern technology for result transmission, reinforcing transparency and credibility ahead of future elections.
