President Donald Trump says US control of Greenland is “vital” for national security and his Golden Dome defence project, ahead of talks with Denmark and Greenland

United States President Donald Trump has declared that US control of Greenland is “vital” for national security and central to his planned Golden Dome air and missile defence system.

Trump made the remarks in a social media post ahead of scheduled White House talks with Danish and Greenlandic officials on the Arctic territory’s strategic future.

Trump said that controlling Greenland would make NATO “far more formidable and effective” and warned that failing to secure the territory could open the door for rival powers such as Russia or China. He described anything short of American control as “unacceptable.”

The comments came on a day when Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt were due to meet Vice President J D Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.

The talks aim to address US concerns and broader security cooperation in the Arctic.

Denmark has sought to ease tensions by boosting its military presence in Greenland and discussing increased NATO engagement in the region, but Greenlandic authorities and residents have repeatedly rejected any suggestion that the island could be transferred to US control.

Trump’s renewed push for influence over Greenland has raised concerns among European allies, who insist that Greenland’s future is a matter for Denmark and the island’s people.

As climate change opens new strategic pathways and resource opportunities in the Arctic, Greenland’s geopolitical significance continues to grow, placing it at the centre of transatlantic diplomatic tensions.
